The Goodwood Festival of Speed is all about celebrating the history and future of motorsport. This year, that future rolled in on four wheels and a whole lot of electric watts. Ford’s wild SuperVan, essentially an electric E-Transit race truck, took the Goodwood Hillclimb by storm, leaving even a heavily modified ICE-powered Subaru in its dust.

Goodwood’s hillclimb is a short, sharp dash up a driveway. It’s not the most punishing race, but it is a great way to see what makes different vehicles tick. For the past few years, the top times have been a battle between screaming F1 cars and crazy electric prototypes. This year, things were a bit more down to earth but no less exciting.

The main contenders were Ford’s SuperVan 4.2 and Subaru’s Project Midnight. Project Midnight is a souped-up WRX with a 2.0-litre petrol engine that churns out a staggering 493 kW and 922 N.m of torque. While the SuperVan is basically Frankenstein’s monster of an electric race truck. Think E-Transit on the outside, but with power that puts it toe to toe with a supercar – over 1 044 kW!

In qualifying, it was anyone’s game. The SuperVan edged out the WRX by a whisker, setting the stage for an epic showdown on Sunday. And showdown it was! The SuperVan blasted up the hill in a scorching 43.9 seconds, leaving the WRX in its wake at 46.1 seconds. This win is a big deal for a few reasons. First, it shows that electric vehicles aren’t just good for commuting – they can be absolute beasts on the track. Second, the SuperVan is a rolling showcase of Ford’s electric vehicle technology. It’s basically a giant experiment with wheels, and seeing it dominate a hillclimb is pretty cool.
