South African bakkie enthusiasts eagerly awaited this high-performance model’s arrival, which promised to deliver unmatched off-road capabilities and a thrilling driving experience. The introduction of the Ranger Raptor was a strategic move for Ford, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and excellence in the competitive bakkie market.

This model was not just another variant; it was a statement of Ford’s engineering prowess and ability to deliver vehicles catering to off-road enthusiasts’ demanding needs. The Raptor featured a host of advanced technologies, including a specially designed chassis, an advanced suspension system, and a powerful 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine, setting it apart from other bakkies in the South African market.

The Raptor also played a crucial role in enhancing the Ford Ranger’s reputation as a versatile and robust vehicle, capable of handling the toughest terrains while providing a comfortable and connected driving experience. It showcased Ford’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of what a bakkie could achieve, cementing its position as a leader in the off-road performance segment.

In our 2019 launch report, we noted:

“The Ranger Raptor is a particularly interesting addition to a local off-road market that generally focuses on low-speed, technical jaunts off the beaten track. The newcomer, by contrast, offers high-speed thrills away from the asphalt, flattering drivers with even limited skill or experience. Still, [we] can’t help but feel the majority of Ranger Raptors sold in SA won’t ever see the sort of terrain for which this vehicle has been expressly designed.”

A rundown on the Ford Ranger Raptor

Ford’s 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine powered the first-generation Ranger Raptor. This powerplant was designed to offer a balance of performance and efficiency, making it well-suited for both on-road and off-road driving. The Bi-Turbo setup features two turbochargers working in sequence to deliver power smoothly across the rev range.

The engine produces an impressive 157 kW of power and 500 N.m of torque, and power delivery is managed by a 10-speed automatic transmission – a first in the segment when the Raptor was introduced. This gearbox offers a wide range of ratios, allowing for smooth and efficient shifts. It also features adaptive shift scheduling, which learns and adapts to the driver’s style and the driving conditions to optimize performance and fuel efficiency.

One of the standout features of the first-generation Ford Ranger Raptor is its bespoke suspension system, designed specifically to enhance off-road capability without compromising on-road comfort. The front suspension utilises an independent double wishbone design with aluminium upper-arms and coil springs, combined with 2.5-inch FOX Racing Shocks dampers.

The rear suspension features a unique Watts Linkage setup with coil-over springs and a solid rear axle, which provides improved lateral control compared to traditional leaf springs. This design helps keep the rear axle centred, reducing body roll and improving stability on rough surfaces.

The combination of long-travel suspension and FOX Racing Shocks dampers enables the Raptor to absorb large impacts and maintain composure over rugged terrain, enhancing both control and comfort.

Things to look out for when buying a used Ford Ranger Raptor

One of the first things to check when buying a used Ranger Raptor is the condition of the suspension. The Raptor is renowned for its sophisticated Fox Racing Shocks suspension; however, this system can be expensive to repair or replace if damaged. Prospective buyers should ensure that the suspension has been well-maintained and that there are no signs of leaks, excessive wear, or damage from off-road excursions.

While the Bi-Turbo engine is generally reliable, it is essential to look out for any signs of turbo issues, such as excessive smoke from the exhaust, loss of power, or unusual noises. Additionally, the transmission should shift smoothly without any jerking or hesitation.

Another aspect to consider is the vehicle’s electronics. Some owners have experienced issues with the infotainment system, including connectivity problems with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. While these issues are generally minor, they can be frustrating and should be checked during a test drive. Additionally, inspecting the condition of the vehicle’s wiring, sensors, and other electronic components is advisable.

The Ranger Raptor’s tow rating and loading capacity are lower than other models in the Ranger lineup. This is primarily due to its unique suspension setup and off-road enhancements. The Raptor is rated to tow up to 2 500 kg, compared to the 3 500 kg capacity of other Ranger models. Additionally, its payload capacity is around 800 kg, which is lower than the 1 000 kg or more found in its siblings.

These compromises are necessary to accommodate the advanced suspension and chassis modifications that make the Raptor so effective off-road. For buyers who need a vehicle primarily for heavy towing or carrying significant loads, these limitations might be a dealbreaker.

Which one to get?

The first-generation Ranger Raptor was produced at Ford’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, South Africa, between 2019 and early 2023. This facility, known for its state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and high standards of quality, was chosen to produce the Raptor for both the local and global markets. The decision to manufacture the Ranger Raptor in South Africa highlighted ‘our’ significance in Ford’s global production strategy and underscored the high level of expertise and capability within the local automotive industry.

Though only one derivative made up the line-up, the Ford Ranger Raptor’s launch in South Africa marked a new era for performance bakkies, combining exceptional off-road capabilities with a robust design. Moreover, its local production and extensive export footprint highlighted South Africa’s role as a crucial hub in Ford’s international operations.

Currently on the CAR listings pages, a 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor (32 000 km) is listed for R839 900, while a 2019 model (106 315 km) sells for R599 900.
